I have been using the "ordering a pizza" scenario for quite some time in
data protection training sessions and awareness talks. It goes down really
well, especially with the cynics in the group who think DP is a waste of
time or those who sit looking at you with the face that can only mean one
thing - "I was forced to come"! If you get some kind of fundamental
objection you can turn it round by saying "OK, suppose there were no
restrictions on your personal data," ... then use the pizza story.

I was always against ID cards and unified national databases. I found the
governments arguments in favour to be spurious to say the least.

I agree that the example is slightly OTT but the idea no longer seems as far
fetched as it did a few years ago.

I hope that the DPA is sufficent to halt such 'advances' but I don’t feel
confident that it will.

I used to be reasonably pro-ID card, but over the past few years I have
realised that whilst the "demonstration" above is a little OTT, everything
seems to be moving that way.

It's very funny in a scary way, but hopefully the DPA in this country will
go a long way to stop it. Will it? Hmmm.....
