If you have to reply to the requestor at this stage perhaps you should say 
that you have forwarded the request to Mr X (whoever lost the docs) and 
that they are dealing with it.  Also send a copy to Mr X so that they know 
what you have done and you could say it was nothing to do with you if the 
thing hits the whirly thing.
