You may be interested to know, if you didn't already, that the ICO made
credit card companies, mail-order companies etc change the design of their
envelopes so that they could have either the company identity or the word
"Statement" (but not both) on the outside - hence all those envelopes saying
"This is not a circular". They also took issue with the point identified by
Carl - in some cases the account number was visible - and made them redesign
the layout of the contents as well - so the answer is yes it is a breach and
yes you should have a go at them.

Subject: BT - Breach of DPA?

Dear All,

I have returned home this evening to find a letter from BT.

The letter refers to the fact that I use CPS with Talktalk to carry my voice
calls (however, it does not specify my SP).

The issue I have with this, although trivial is that the letter is sent in
an A4 envelope with a window revealing the entire content, in fact, I read
it without even opening it.

Admittedly, the issue is minor (i.e. who cares if I use CPS or not).
However, I expect written communications (regardless of intention) to be
private and certainly when the data used to issue the letter is taken from a
database which is supposed to be secure.

So, the fact that BT reveal information about my service in this manner - is
it a breach of the DPA? Is it worth reporting to BT?

Carl
