My son is currently applying for vacation placements with serious
heavyweight professional firms. He is filling out an online form as I type
this.

This form asks for his sexual orientation and his religion which will,
apparently, be used for monitoring purposes only, is optional and "Will be
removed from his application before the application is screened"

"Dad," he said, "I don't actually mind answering these questions, but isn't
that a bit 'iffy'?"

The question I have is "How do we know we can believe statements the firm
has made, or that particular religious or particularly oriented groups will
not be given a more or less positive experience by the answers (or
otherwise) to this question?" [I am not implying anything about the
reputability of the firm concerned.]

Come to that, when National Identity Cards are inflicted on us, and we have
to give our NID when applying (yes I know about Nat Ins numbers), how do we
know that the NID database will not be updated with our religion,
orientation, health, trade union membership etc? Ah wait, THAT will all be
there already!
