Internal market: Commission seeks mandate to negotiate UN
Convention on "e-contracting" (16 June 2005)The European Commission has asked the Council for authorisation to open negotiations, on behalf of the EU, on a draft UN Convention aiming to make it easier to conclude international business to business contracts electronically. The negotiations will take place within the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL).

EU Structural Funds contribute with an investment of 13
billion Euro to research and innovation projects (16 June 2005)The Structural Funds play a substantial role in promoting research and innovation in the European Union. Between 2000 and 2006, roughly EUR 13 billion will be spent on research infrastructure and networks, innovative business start-ups and the modernisation of small and medium-sized enterprises, financed through the Structural Funds. This amount is expected to increase from 2007, as the EU's regional policy focuses increasingly on the Union's goals of greater competitiveness and dynamism.

Conference on the Functioning of the 98/34 Notification
Procedure
22 June 2005  Brussels, BelgiumThe aim of this event is to give an overview of Directive 98/34/EC which lays down an information procedure in the field of national regulations relating to products and of rules on information society services. The main goals of the notification procedure are dialogue, prevention, transparency and reciprocal control.

NEWS ARTICLE
i2010 initiative presented at the European Parliament (15 June 2005)Viviane Reding, Member of the European Commission responsible for Information Society and Media, presented the i2010 initiative to the Committee on Culture and Education and the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy. After the presentations and subsequent discussions, Mrs. Reding opened an exhibition in the European Parliament, hosted by Lorenzo Cesa, MEP. It illustrated the essential contribution of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) research to the creation of growth, jobs, prosperity, a more inclusive society and a better quality of life for all our citizens. The projects at the exhibition demonstrated how ICTs are contributing in areas as diverse as research networking, air travel, cardiovascular treatment, digital cinema, marine pollution and water quality.

3rd EU-China Workshop on Digital Olympics
22 June 2005  Beijing, ChinaThis workshop is supported by the European Commission (DG Information Society and Media), the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), the municipality of Beijing and the Beijing Olympic Committee  for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG). This event, taking place in the framework of the "EU-China cooperation on Digital Olympics", aims at providing Chinese and European research institutes and companies with a key opportunity to get updated information on the Digital Olympics and Digital Beijing programmes and to network with organisations and officials involved in these programmes. One of the flagship projects of the EU-China Cooperation on Digital Olympics in the next years should be an "EU-China pavilion on Digital Olympics" during the 2008 Games to exhibit success stories of the EU-China cooperation in the ICT field.

During this workshop, market players will provide a broad overview of mainstream developments of future networks and services, and seek to bring out the important policy and regulatory issues for the future.
The workshop is directed towards policy makers and regulators, but is open to anyone who may have an interest. Attendance is free of charge but registration is required.

23 June 2005 - 24 June 2005  Brussels, BelgiumWorkshop objectives: (i) to foster interaction and discussion among participants and Commission officials to facilitate the preparation of proposals to be submitted to the area of Networked Embedded Systems; (ii) to review the main research challenges to be addressed at European level around the concept of Co-operating Objects. These objects range from millimetre scale devices containing sensing, computation, communications and power supply, over portable devices, home appliances, consumer electronics products to complex machines as cars, planes and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.
