PhD Research Programme
Date available: Dec 2005

Clinical Pharmacology and Discovery Medicine at GlaxoSmithKline is
committed to encourage the inclusion of paediatric considerations in GSK
drug development programmes. On behalf of the coordinator of the GSK
paediatric network I would like to inform you of the following
opportunity:

A Fellowship Scheme has been established to foster closer interaction
between clinical researchers and industry. A candidate for this fellowship
is being sought for a collaboration in Pharmacometrics between the
University of Leiden, The Netherlands and GlaxoSmithKline R&D.

New medicinal products with appropriate dosing recommendation should be
made available to the paediatric population. However, developmental and
intrinsic biological differences may or may not yield sub-populations for
which a different dosing regimen is required. This fellowship involves
exploring the utility of PK and PKPD modelling strategies for the
evaluation of treatment effect in children. The extrapolation of data from
one population to another and the analysis of treatment response in
sub-populations will be the focus of this research programme.

The candidate will use a variety of modelling tools during the fellowship
including NONMEM, WinBUGS and mathematical and statistical packages such
as R / SPLUS. The candidate should hold a degree in Medicine,
Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biostatistics, Bioengineering or a related field.
Computer programming skills and some experience in the area of modelling
are highly desirable. The successful candidate will spend time working at
both the University of Leiden and GlaxoSmithKline R&D, UK. Excellent
communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills are essential.
