Dear All,

I thought some people on the list might find the following set of resources very useful, they are easy to include in Bbd courses, and even those with the portal, perhaps a new tab.

Cheers

Andy

Helping students develop Internet research skills
- with the RDN Virtual Training Suite

- THE WHY -

Internet research skills are increasingly recognized as an essential part of the curriculum for university students (QAA Benchmark standards).

Students arriving at university or college are often familiar with using the Internet, perhaps for school homework, shopping or leisure, but they won't be familiar with using the Internet to support their higher or further education. These tutorials offer an introduction to using the Internet for research at these levels.

Concerns have also been highlighted amongst academics and librarians about students finding and referencing poor quality, inappropriate online sources. With so much information available on the Internet, students need more help and guidance than ever before in finding 'the best of the web'.

- THE WHERE -

The RDN Virtual Training Suite offers over 60 free online tutorials that can help students learn how to use the Internet effectively for their research for coursework and assignments.

There's a tutorial for most subjects taught in UK universities and colleges, with titles ranging from "Internet Medic" to "Internet Mathematician" and "Internet for English" to "Internet Economist".

All our tutorials are regularly updated and maintained by lecturers and librarians UK-wide - so if you've visited them before why not take another look to see how they've changed?

The RDN Virtual Training Suite is FREE from:
http://www.vts.rdn.ac.uk

The tutorials are designed to be used as part of taught courses, either as a resource to base a session around or as a free-standing tutorial. Popular sections are:

- a tour of key, reliable Web sites for the subject
- a guide to Internet search techniques & tools
- hints on evaluating results from a Google search
- interactive quizzes giving formative feedback

We hope you will find the tutorials useful.

- THE WOW -

There are some free teaching and training resources available, which you are welcome to adapt for use locally:

Free posters for each tutorial can be downloaded from:
