Apologies for cross posting A new website illustrating the impressive range of Yorkshire's traditional crafts and craftspeople has been launched by Sheffield Hallam University at http://extra.shu.ac.uk/yorkshirecrafts/index.html. The site showcases a collection of pictures of traditional Yorkshire trades taken by photographer David Morgan Rees during the 1970s, and includes furniture carvers, cobble boat building, furniture makers, coopers, cutlers, ecclesiastical glazers, thatchers and a ship figure-head carver. A number of crafts demonstrated in the photos are no longer practised so the website will be a valuable tool for historians and enthusiasts alike. The site was developed to widen access to the pictures (please see the site's copyright statement for conditions of use) and carried out as a collaboration between Hallam's Learning Centre and Slide Collection staff. Two books of David Morgan Rees's work have been published; 'Yorkshire Craftsmen at Work' and 'In the Palm of a Dale'. The original photographs have been available from the Psalter Lane Learning Centre of Sheffield Hallam University for several years and have been exhibited across Yorkshire, including Harewood House and the Dales Countryside Museum. Fifty framed photographs are available for loan for exhibition purposes.
