Steph They can download from digital cameras to a computer and thence copy to disc. If the students do that in order to project these images in a seminar that changes the situation doesn't it? It's not private research and study then. Do you make it explicitly clear with a notice that that use of copied digital images is illegal? If so do you have a copy I could have please? I need to advise our lecturers about digital images and copyright (with ref to Blackboard) so am trying to get my head as clear as possible about this. In other words the copying is done under "fair dealing". Notices should give guidance eg. only make copies for research and private study for a non-commercial purposes, single copies only etc. I attend LACA (Libraries Archives & Copyright Group) meetings and most copyright experts on the group support this view. I know there are other questions regarding disturbing other readers, damaging the books, etc., and this is down to individual institutions. Students here at Coventry sometimes use their own digital cameras but it's always been OK - not really a disturbance to other users.
