There has already been some publicity for the Public Sector Information (PSI) directive and regulations, on this list and elsewhere. I shall be publishing a piece on the subject in Record Keeping in July.

The directive on the re-use of public sector information was passed in November 2003, and will be brought into force in the UK by regulations in July 2005. The intention is to harmonise the licensing of information held by public sector bodies, excluding works in third party copyrights, so as to encourage the growth of the information publishing industry. The regulations will not control access to information but instead will ensure that information which is available to the public is licensed for re-use.

Information held by educational, research and cultural establishments, including archives, is excluded from the scope of the directive and the regulations. The precise definition of this exclusion is currently being worked on.

Subject: Making non-personal public sector information available on demand to the private sector by the 1 July 2005

Does anyone please know anything about the following item (taken from the Public Sector Forums website), and the extent of the exclusions for archives and libraries which are said to apply ?

"Did you know those with responsibility for records management now face yet another imminent challenge - making non-personal public sector information (PSI) available on demand to the private sector by the 1 July 2005? As with FOI, public sector bodies will have 20 working days in which to respond to applications and there'll be a robust complaints and disputes process."
