Preserving Tibetan Medical Texts

A visual presentation by

Barbara Gerke
(M.Sc., D.Phil. cand. Green College, Oxford)

The International Trust for Traditional Medicine (ITTM) in Kalimpong, a town in the Darjeeling Hills (India), is a pioneering institution for the study of Tibetan Medicine.

Barbara Gerke, a researcher of Tibetan Medicine and Culture and head of the Trust, will talk about ITTM's efforts to digitalise Tibetan medical texts from the 9th to the 19th centuries, making them available to the public. This, as well as ITTM's history, mission, other research projects (e.g. the Sanskrit-Tibetan-English Medical Glossary, annual Social and Medical Anthropology Seminars) and its facilities (library and herb garden for researchers) will be presented. This talk will be of interest to people studying the history and practice of Tibetan Medicine and related Asian medical systems, researchers, students. After the talk there will be ample opportunity to discuss the possibilities of doing research or volunteering at ITTM, a unique and stimulating environment for conducting research in the Himalayas.

Everybody is welcome for snacks and drinks after the talk.

Donations towards the Data Input Project of Tibetan medical texts will be gratefully accepted.
