New grant schemes from the ESRC
1. In a move designed to address both current and future research needs, the ESRC has announced the launch of its new grants schemes.
2. The initiatives will form a major part of the Council's commitment to creating new research opportunities by extending the range of responsive funding available. The schemes will broaden and extend research opportunities as well as create new opportunities for international collaboration.

3. A First Grants scheme will assist new entrants to research and academic careers. A Large Grants scheme will provide a mechanism for experienced researchers. A new bi-lateral International Collaborative Grants scheme will facilitate collaboration between UK researchers and those in other countries.
4. The First Grants scheme will be based upon an annual competition where all Higher Education Institution staff and recognised Independent Research Organisations can apply for funding of up to £400,000 within Full Economic Costing (FEC) procedures. Up to 20 annual First Grants awards are envisaged. Applications for the First Grants scheme must be received by 4 January 2006.

5. The Large Grants scheme will provide experienced researchers requiring long term funding with the support they need for work such as a series of linked projects, cross-institutional team based research, and medium to large surveys.
6. The Large Grant scheme is an open competition programme with a 31st January 2006 closing date. Applications can be for up to 5 years in duration about £1,500,000 up to £5,000,000 within FEC procedures.
