Dear Colleagues,

The next seminar of the South Wales local group of the RSS will take place on
Wednesday 9th March at 5pm (Tea 4.30pm in the Foyer) at the Cinema, Welsh
Assembly Government Building, Cathays Park, Cardiff.

The speaker is Richard Cracknell (Head of Social Statistics, House of Commons
Library) on:

Politicians, Parliament and Statistics

Politicians like to use statistics extensively in their work. Richard
Cracknell heads a politically impartial team of statisticians in the House of
Commons which provides Members of Parliament with statistics to do their job.
The subjects they have to cover mirror the lives of MPs, from local government
finance to demography, education and welfare to road accidents (and that's
just on Monday!).

In his talk, Richard will look at where parliamentarians get their statistics
from and how they use (and abuse) them. He will also consider the implications
for dissemination and accessibility of statistics that are posed by an
increasingly electronic-only environment and the role that statistics play in
having a truly informed democracy.

All are welcome.

Best wishes
Rebecca
