Can the Cochrane Review answer the question: Is Birth Centre Labour
and Birth Safe?
Kathleen Fahy, Professor of Midwifery
The University of Newcastle, Australia
The Cochrane Review on Home-like versus conventional institutional
settings for birth found that there was a non-significant increase
in perinatal mortality for babies booked for birth centre care when
compared with those booked for hospital care. The validity of this
Cochrane review are discussed along with an overview of how much
weight we should put on this review in providing us with reliable
information about the safety of birth centres or hospital care.
