medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

From: Jim Bugslag <[log in to unmask]>

> Besides the use of the word "basilica" as a general architectural type, it
came to be used in a highly technical manner by the Catholic Church as a
designation for a category of church.... a very important church of some
sort.

St. Suger's beloved St. Denny is now classified as a "basilica", i believe.

though one also frequently sees it styled a "cathedral", the commonly
(mis-)used term among the ill-informed for any "big ole church".
