medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (2. December) is the feast day of:

Bibiana (Viviana) (4th cent.) The subject of an early cult in Rome
(the church of St. Bibiana there dates from the fifth century), B.'s
story comes to us in the form of untrustworthy legend. This tells
that she was the daughter of an ex-prefect who had been persecuted
for his Christianity during the reign of Julian the Apostate. After
dad died of ill-treatment and banishment, B's mother was beheaded,
and B. herself and her sister were arrested. The sister died of the
shock of arrest; B. was scourged to death.

Chromatius (d. c. 407) Chromatius was a native of Aquileia who
became bishop there in 388. He was a friend of Jerome and helped
finance J's translation of the Bible, besides writing several
scriptural commentaries of his own.

A modern beata: Liduina Meneguzzi (d. 1941) LM was the daughter of a
poor family who worked as a servant before joining the Sisters of the
Congregation of St. Francis de Sales in 1926. In 1937 she was sent
to Ethiopia, where she worked as a nurse first for civilians and then
for soldiers. She made herself loved by all, and when she died of
cancer was buried at the soldiers' request in their cemetery. LM was
beatified in 2002.
