which means that we have a responsibility to integrate the information ... and maintain the digital (and hardcopy) resources that we hold and generate ... our work is never done as the new technologies develop you adapt and update your archives .. just keeping the archive is not enough you need to be aware of how things are moving .. I point to the fact DVD is on the way out and will likely be replaced by HHD Jas -----Original Message----- From: [log in to unmask] [mailto:[log in to unmask]] Sent: Monday, December 20, 2004 4:19 PM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: (Less) Ancient Recording Systems Or, for an even more recent example, consider the difficulties the BBC had in retrieving information from their late 1980s (Or was it early 1990s?) Domesday project on those big shiny LP-sized video discs! So the problems encountered in these are directly relevant to those we are all meeting everyday. Those of us who require submission of digital versions of reports, survey data, completion of oasis forms etc., as part of completion of a piece of fieldwork, are taking the chance that we're creating more of these digital monsters. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh... Jim PS For those too young: LP - an analogue music circular reproduction format of initially splendid quality which can be selectively converted into big ashtrays - Bay City Rollers albums get my vote every time.... +~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~ +~+~ +~+~+~+~+ Jim McNeil, South Yorkshire Archaeology Service Development Services, Howden House 1 Union Street, Sheffield, S1 2SH Tel.: 0114 273 6428 Fax.: 0114 273 5002 Email: [log in to unmask] Website: http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/in-your-area/planning-and-city-development/u rban -design--conservation/archaeology +~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~+~ +~+~ +~+~+~+~+ -----Original Message----- From: David Evans [mailto:[log in to unmask]] Sent: 17 December 2004 16:53 To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Ancient Recording Systems Martin Newman set me a challenge by saying that Cretan Linear A had no relevance to HERs. I must disagree, in many ways the similarities between Linear A (and other untranslated languages) and modern recording systems should come as no shock to anyone who has heard of the Newham archive. A warning that no matter how good your recording system appears it is no use if it cannot be translated. Perhaps Linear A is too distant in time but Pongo Pongo which ceased to be used on Easter Island in the 1860 demonstrates that more recent recording systems can be lost. We claim to be recording the past for the future, but are we. Think about it when pro celebrity mole strangling appears on tv on Christmas afternoon!
