WHO
public competition for logo design - Commission on Social Determinants of
Health
Website: http://www.who.int/social_determinants/logo_competition/en/
Submission
deadline has been extended to 15 January 2005.
"......The World Health
Organization, (WHO) is announcing a public competition for the logo design for
the new Commission on Social Determinants of Health. This invitation is extended
to all amateur and professional designers who are not serving WHO staff members,
or immediate family members of WHO staff members.
The logo will form
the basis of all visual representations of the Commission in print, web and
broadcast communications, and within these and other communication materials
will be disseminated to specialist communities and the general public, in all
parts of the world. WHO wishes to receive
submissions from all regions of the
world, encouraging designers in the developing as well as developed world,
established and new designers.
The secretariat for
the Commission on Social
Determinants of Health is seeking designs for a visual identity for the
Commission that will be used in all communications and media, including: Letter
head, fax, brochures, Publications, Press material, Website, E-mail, Television
broadcast material, Video-streaming, Conference
presentations
The designer of the
chosen logo will receive an award of $1000 for the work involved in the design,
be invited to present their design to the
Commissioners and the world's press
at the Commission launch meeting and will be the subject of the publicity
campaign generated for the
logo selection process. All designers whose work
will be used in Commission materials will be featured in a special section on
the web site which
will include selected samples of
work.
What
is the Commission About?
It is known that
poor people and those from socially disadvantaged groups become sicker and die
sooner than people in more privileged
social positions. Inadequate medical
care explains part of these differences, but science shows that most suffering
and death and the bulk of global health disparities are the result of social
factors. These include poverty, gender and ethnic discrimination, education,
nutrition, access to water, housing and children's early life conditions.
The Commission will
work on these and other determinants of health, produce scientifically informed
policy recommendations and spearhead
a political process that promotes the
implementation of these recommendations, in all countries. It
will operate for
three years from
March 2005 and will hold 3 - 4 major events a
year, mostly in developing countries. They will follow specific themes, such as
early child health,
urbanization and health, or the health challenges faced
by particular communities, for example Roma populations or slum
dwellers.
The logo needs to
reflect the essence of the Commission. The design can develop from the social
factors, the Commission's global remit,
or the nature of health
in-equalities. What are the root causes of ill health and differences in the
health of various communities and societies?
What are the social conditions
that lay behind the high incidence of disease and illness found in some areas,
or that make certain communities
and populations less healthy than others?
These questions, or other information on social determinants of health,
(including information posted
on the Commission's website http://www.who.int/social_determinants
) may inspire
designs for the Commission logo. The logo has to resonate,
illustrate or
explain the mandate of the Commission in a literal way, perhaps using
photographic images, or in an abstract or figurative
way.
