Here it is with the correct strapline: sorry. Hey - i've got a one month
old baby in the house, so i've an excuse !

Dear all,

I'd like to bring your attention to the following thematic session to be
held at the 2005 EGU Conference in Vienna. The abstract deadline is in
January BUT if you are interested in taking part, it would be very
useful if you could drop either Ernie or myself a note by e-mail(contact
details below). We hope to invite a keynote speaker or two - details
will follow later.
Best wishes

TS17 Weak faults vs. strong faults: potential deformation mechanisms
in the upper crust

Convenors: Bob Holdsworth & Ernie Rutter

Faults fundamentally influence the distribution of deformation in the
lithosphere and, in the upper crust, seismicity. Yet, despite many years
of study, many fundamental issues concerning fault strength remain
unsolved. Whilst there is a concensus that fault zones in the ductile
regions of the crust are likely to be weak, it is still unclear whether
upper crustal faults weak or strong in either an absolute or relative
sense. A whole range of geological, geophysical and experimental studies
have been directed toward solving these problems, but many
misunderstandings and misconceptions have arisen due to the differing
resolutions and limitations of the different techniques applied.
Clearly, a cross-disciplinary approach is required and in the light of
the ongoing work in the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD),
it is therefore timely to bring together a broad range of geosciensts to
discuss the problem of fault rheology and strength in the upper crust.
