Spin and Corporate Power,

Strathclyde University

November 18th & 19th 2004.

The Department of Geography and Sociology at Strathclyde University is hosting a two day research seminar on the topic of spin and corporate power in November.  Leading experts from around the world will converge on Glasgow to discuss how spin works and how it might be countered.  Speakers from Australia, the US, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, England and Scotland are taking part. Organisations taking part include Platform, Corporate Europe Observatory, PR Watch, Corporate Watch and leading academic researchers.

A key feature of the seminar will be discussion about taking forward collaborative interdisciplinary research initiatives. The seminar has practical goals in encouraging the spread of 'useful knowledge': it aims to spread knowledge about spin and corporate lobbying. The emphasis is upon practical activity and social science in the public interest.

The keynote address on Thursday evening will be given by Professor Leslie Sklair (LSE), author of Globalisation: Capitalism and its Alternatives (2002) and The Transnational Capitalist Class (2001).
