Spin and Corporate Power,

Strathclyde University





















November 18th & 19th 2004.

The Department of Geography and Sociology at Strathclyde University is
hosting a two day research seminar on the topic of spin and corporate power
in November.  Leading experts from around the world will converge on Glasgow
to discuss how spin works and how it might be countered.  Speakers from
Australia, the US, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, England and Scotland
are taking part. Organisations taking part include Platform, Corporate
Europe Observatory, PR Watch, Corporate Watch and leading academic
researchers.

A key feature of the seminar will be discussion about taking forward
collaborative interdisciplinary research initiatives. The seminar has
practical goals in encouraging the spread of 'useful knowledge': it aims to
spread knowledge about spin and corporate lobbying. The emphasis is upon
practical activity and social science in the public interest.

The keynote address on Thursday evening will be given by Professor Leslie
Sklair (LSE), author of Globalisation: Capitalism and its Alternatives
(2002) and The Transnational Capitalist Class (2001).
