For reference only. In Western Australia, the State Records Office has issued a General Disposal Authority for Administrative Records and in the section dealing with the 'day-to-day' operations of 'Technology and Telecommunications' systems there is the following definition

15.12.4    System usage records (eg Internet services logs)  D (Destroy) Recommended Custody - 2 years after last action
but under Security
15.14.3    Security breaches - reports and investigations D (Destroy) Recommended Custody - 7 years after last action

So again, the operational needs have to be addressed. If the logs are just showing operational interaction then we will keep for 2 years but where reports are run to detect security breaches and breaches are found and are investigated then those reports would be kept for 7 years after the investigation. Many 'secruity' breaches are found on systems but most are just 'technical' and are not evidence of unwarranted action so I would class those as being 'system usage records'.

If anyone would like to look at the GDA go to www.sro.wa.gov.au and follow through the prompts on Recordkeeping etc

It's interesting to see the different issues that come up on the UK list, some the same but others relate directly to legislation.

Subject: Retention For Activity Logs - Apologies

Hi

Apologies if you have already received this but according to my reports in my inbox I am having trouble posting this to the list - so thought I would try one last time.

I have been asked a question on "how long do we keep Intranet Activity Logs".  I have looked in the information I have and can find no reference to these.

Can anyone advise me the minimum retention period is for these.  I would be very grateful.

Kind regards
