I'm not absolutely sure, but perhaps some of these questions might be answered in
Joseph Polzer, "Aristotle, Mohammed and Nicholas V in Hell," Art Bulletin, 46
(1987), 457-63, which, I believe, is principally on the Campo Santo frescoes in Pisa.
