medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Today (25. October) is the feast day of: Chrysanthus and Daria (d. 283) Authentic martyrs with legendary frills. Chrysanthus, says legend, was a wealthy Egyptian who was converted and baptized in Rome. He married a Greek woman named Daria and converted her, after which the two decided to live together in chastity. The pair went on to convert more Romans, but were denounced as Christians. The tribune in charge of their trial was so impressed by C's attitude while being tortured that *he* converted, along with his wife, two sons, and 70 of his soldiers. The emperor had them all killed. Daria was sent to a brothel, but a helpful lion (I don't know what he was doing in a brothel, but some cats have odd tastes) defended her, so she was then inadequately stoned and buried alive. Crispin and Crispinian (d. c. 287) Legend tells that C & C were noble brothers who went to Gaul to convert people in the area of Soissons, which they did with great success, supporting themselves as shoemakers. They were arrested, tortured, then beheaded. Fronto and George (?) According to legend, Fronto was a Lycaonian, one of Jesus' original 72 disciples. He and a priest named George were sent to preach to the people of Gaul. F. is regarded as the first bishop of Perigord and G the first bishop of Le Puy, although it's highly unlikely that they lived as early as the first century. Modern saints: Today is the group memorial of the 40 Martyrs of England and Wales, a collection of 40 of the about 300 Catholics executed for their faith between 1535 and 1679; the 40 were selected in 1970. The group includes 3 Carthusians, 1 Brigittine, 1 Augustinian, 10 Jesuits, 3 Benedictines, 2 Franciscans, 13 secular clerics, 4 laymen, and 3 laywomen. ********************************************************************** To join the list, send the message: join medieval-religion YOUR NAME to: [log in to unmask] To send a message to the list, address it to: [log in to unmask] To leave the list, send the message: leave medieval-religion to: [log in to unmask] In order to report problems or to contact the list's owners, write to: [log in to unmask] For further information, visit our web site: http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/medieval-religion.html
