medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (24. October) is the feast day of:

Felix of Thibiuca (d. 303) Felix was bishop of Thibiuca in Africa.
He refused to surrender his church's sacred books, as requied by
Diocletian's edict, so was decapitated.

Proclus (d. 446) Proclus was a disciple of John Chrysostom. He
opposed the choice of Nestorius as patriarch of Constantinople, and
ended up becoming patriarch in his stead. P. remained an adamant
opponent of Nestorianism. He also won much appreciation for his work
after the city was devastated by an earthquake.

Aretas and companions (d. 523) Aretas was head of the community of
Hadran in southwest Arabia. He and 340 townspeople were
treacherously massacred by a Jewish tribe that had made peace with
them. The event is denounced in the Qur'an.

Maglorius (aka Maelor) (d. c. 586) Maelor was born in Wales, a son
of St. Umbrafel. He became a disciple of St. Samson and accompanied
S. to Brittany. M. became an abbot there and succeeded Samson as
bishop of Dol. When old, he abdicated and became a hermit.

Martin of Vertou (d. 601) Martin was a Frank who became a hermit in
Brittany. He attracted numerous disciples, and ended up founding the
monastery of Vertou with them.

A modern saint: Anthony Claret (d. 1870) AC was a Spanish weaver
until at age 22 he went to seminary and became a secular priest. He
tried to become a Jesuit, but had to give up during his novitiate
because of poor health. A. founded the Missionary Sons of the
Immaculate Heart of Mary, dedicated to missionary work. He became
archbishop of Santiago (Cuba) in 1850, but won so many murderous
enemies with his reform attempts that he returned to Spain and became
the queen's confessor. A. is regarded as a leader of the Catholic
revival in Spain. He certainly worked hard enough, preaching over
25,000 sermons and publishing about 144 books and pamphlets. He was
canonized in 1950.
