Dear Alan and everybody else, The training activities with which the Map Curator's Group is involved are open to all (like the Ritz, i.e. as long as you pay). We are definitely not an exclusive band. I believe that only a small minority of the delegates of the last training day were members of the group. Alan raises an issue that is increasingly becoming a problem. Quoting from his e-mail of 1 September: 'Problem now is, what do I do with all the old unwanted maps? Most surplus maps advertised on this base are all of a similar kind!' The issue of map disposal seems to be cropping up with increasing regularity. Doing anything other than throwing things in a skip takes a lot of time and effort, often with little result. I've found that some things that I've not been able to shed via lis-maps or ordnancemaps I've posted to relevant Oxfam shops. Also local art colleges may be keen to take maps away as material for collage. Some libraries go to great lengths to put detailed disposal lists on the internet. Perhaps we could do with a Cartographiti article on 'How I can get rid of my maps'. Sounds somewhat sacrilegious. Anyone feel like putting pen to paper? I think the issue was discussed on MAPS-L a while back. Best wishes all Tinho (who still has a few maps left) -- Antonio da Cruz (Tinho) [log in to unmask] Map Curator, Department of Geography, Roxby Building University of Liverpool, LIVERPOOL L69 7ZT Telephone: 0151 794 2844 Fax: 0151 794 2866 See the British Archaeological Association web page http://www.britarch.ac.uk/baa
