The Association for the Study of Ethnicity and Nationalism (ASEN) is holding its 15th Annual Conference, entitled Nation and Empire, on Wednesday and Thursday, April 20-21, 2005, at the London School of Economics. The first day of the conference is dedicated to a discussion of the topic of "Nation and Empire" by leading scholars in the field, including: Selim Deringil, Peter Heather, Geoffrey Hosking, Dominic Lieven, Michael Mann and Alexander Motyl. The second day offers opportunities for scholars to examine the significance of empire in the context of the study of nationalism in a series of panel sessions. Suggested themes include: * Ancient Empire * Myths and Memories of Empire * The Collapse of Empire and the Rise of Nations * The American Empire and Post-Imperialism * Empire and Representation - Art and Image The 2005 Conference Committee is now calling for papers to be presented on Thursday, April 21, 2005. The application is open to any researcher who is interested in the study of nationalism and/or empire, and PhD students and young scholars are particularly encouraged to apply. The deadline for applications is November 1, 2004 and the Committee will notify applicants by November 30, 2004. Suggestions for panels and additional themes are also welcome. Papers submitted to the conference will also be considered for publication in a special issue of Studies in Ethnicity and Nationalism (SEN).
