Dear all
Some of you may be interested in the forthcoming SRA evening seminar, on domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking. See below for further details.
5:00pm, 16 August 2004 (light refreshments from 4:30pm)
at the Nuffield Foundation, 28 Bedford Square, London WC1B 3JS
Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Stalking: Findings from the British Crime Survey
Domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking are important, but most official statistics and surveys record only a fraction of the offences. The self-completion module within the 2001 British Crime Survey (BCS) encourages wider reporting of experiences than the main face-to-face part of the survey. The prevalence of domestic violence is five times higher in the self-completion than face-to-face part of the BCS.
Sylvia Walby, Professor of Sociology at the University of Leeds, will be talking about the implications of different definitions of inter-personal violence for the measurement of its extent, for both women and men. She will also report some of the findings from the BCS, such as the nature of the violence, the overlap between the different forms, the extent to which it continues after separation, the associated risk factors and help-seeking actions.
The seminar is free to SRA members, while a small charge of £5 is payable by non-members. The seminar will take place at The Nuffield Foundation, Founders Room, 28 Bedford Square, London WC1B 3JS (directions available at http://www.nuffieldfoundation.org/go/contactus/page_17.html). There is no need to book: simply turn up on the evening.
The seminar will start promptly at 5:00pm, followed by drinks at a local bar at 6.30pm.
The Social Research Association looks forward to welcoming you.
