MSc Assessment and Treatment of Sex Offenders,
School of Psychology - Forensic Section,
University of Leicester.

The ATSO course is designed for potential students who are currently
involved in the management, assessment and treatment of sex offenders.

The principal aim of this course us to extend practitioners' knowledge and
understanding of theory and research in the assessment and treatment of sex
offenders. This knowledge includes not only an appreciation of theory and
research, but also an awareness of the strengths and limitations of such
evidence, as well as its applications. A particular aim of the course is to
make this learning available to practitioners who wish to improve their
academic knowledge and continue their professional development in this area
through distance learning. The course contains modules on Cognitive-
Behavioural Theory and Practice, Assessment and Treatment of Sex Offenders,
Practical Assessment and Clinical skills (or Management Skills) and
Dissertation Support. In addition, we hold a two day Course Conference each
year where guest speakers are invited to talk on their specialised fields
of research.

The MSc course is available over a two year period starting in October each
year. Students who do not wish to continue the course after the first year
may apply for a Post Graduate Diploma award if they have satisfactorily
completed the relevant modules.

The selection criteria are as follows:

1. Current management of sexual offenders or supervision of a treatment
programme including sex offenders (which is necessary to complete the
practical elements of the course).

2. The likelihood of working with sexual offenders for the next two years.

3. A depth of work experience with this group of offenders, for example,
working with sex offenders for at least one year.

4. Relevant first degree/professional qualification.

The closing date for applications is 3rd September 2004. For further
information and an application form please contact Helen Tedder or Mina
Mistry on 0116 252 2423.
