medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (19. August) is the feast day of:

Andrew the Tribune (d. c. 300) Known in the East as "the great martyr," Andrew was an officer in Galerius' army. He was discharged when he converted to Christianity and executed by the governor of Cilicia.

Mochta (d. c. 535) Mochta was born in Britain but taken to Ireland as a child. Late legend tells that he was a disciple of Patrick, went to Rome, and was consecrated as bishop by Leo I. He returned with a group of 12 disciples to Ireland and built the monastery of Louth.

Bertulf (d. 640) Bertulf was converted to Christianity by his kinsman Arnulf of Metz; he became a monk at Luxeuil in c. 620, later moving on to Bobbio where he became abbot.

Sebald (d. c. 770) An untrustworthy legend tells that Sebald was a hermit near Vincenza who then accompanied Willibald as a missionary to Germany. He then became a hermit in the Reichswald, where his miracles include turning icicles into firewood for a poor peasant. He is the patron of Nurnberg.

Louis of Anjou (d. 1297) Louis was the son of Charles II of Sicily and his wife Mary. When his dad was captured in battle in 1284, L. and two of his brothers were sent to Barcelona as hostages. He spent seven years there. When released, L. refused to marry, disclaimed his right to the throne, and at the age of 23 became bishop of Toulouse (becoming a Franciscan somewhere along the way). L. resigned his bishopric after a few months and died at the age of 25. He was canonized in 1317.

A modern saint: John Eudes (d. 1680) John Eudes was a Norman, the son of a farmer. He became an Oratorian and famous opponent of Jansenism. He ended up founding a congregation of secular priests (the Eudists), dedicated to establishing good seminaries and conducting missions. He was canonized in 1925.
