medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (5. August) is the feast day of:

Addai and Mari (d. c. 180?) Legend tells that Jesus promised to send a disciple to King Abgar at Edessa and Addai, one of the 72, was chosen. He cured Abgar of an incurable disease, converted him (and his people) to Christianity, etc. Addai's own disciple Mari went on to be a missionary along the Tigris. More historically, both seem to have been missionaries in the late second century and both have been venerated since an early date as apostles of Syria and Persia.

Afra (d. 304) According to legend, Afra was a prostitute of Augsburg who refused to sacrifice to the state gods and was burned to death. What was left of her body was rescued and buried by her mother and 3 servants. They were caught, and when they refused to sacrifice were locked in Afra's tomb and also burned to death.

Nonna (d. 374) Nonna was a Christian who married the magistrate Gregory of Nazianzus and converted him to Christianity. He ended up as the church father Gregory Nazianzen the Elder; their three children all were recognized as saints.
