medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Two brief points: the original "voodoo" mention was not mine exactly but that of the persons responsible for posting the photo; along with the crutches, etc. was a prominent statue of Saint Lucy (I suppose) holding a pair of eyeballs in a plate. The latter are well known from Greek and Roman antiquity and their use is evidently much older than that. But the particular practice of which I was speaking was that indicated in my altered Subject line: leaving crutches, braces, walkers, etc. as ex votos. Here's a modern example (also from the formerly French New World) focusing on these alone: http://www.kensmen.com/catholic/crutchesofsteannedebeaupre2.jpg There's plenty of Old World evidence too for these as ex votos (and by no means restricted to Italy, which I cited by way of example in response to Marjorie's mention of voodoo). But what evidence do we have that they were also widely used in this fashion in Greek and Roman antiquity? And when and where do we begin to hear of their use as ex votos medievally?
