Here is one useful email for those of you who work in Reader Development. Bsail Nankivell -----Original Message----- From: Genevieve Clarke [mailto:[log in to unmask]] Sent: 18 June 2004 09:12 To: [log in to unmask] Cc: Basil Nankivell; Ruth Subject: basic skills resources In response to Basil Nankivell's enquiry about basic skills resources, glad to hear they have invested in the First Choice collections of mainstream titles for adults with reading ages between 9 and 14 - in fact I've seen them prominently on display in Bath Central Library. The Basic Skills Agency Resource Centre is a good source of information about practical texts and readers - see http://ioewebserver.ioe.ac.uk/ioe/cms/get.asp? (or http://www.ioe.ac.uk under Library) for their online catalogue. Meanwhile through the Reading Agency's Vital Link programme we are continuing to identify mainstream fiction and non-fiction titles for this audience. Some of you will be interested to hear that Irish publisher New Island's fourth Open Door series is now available including titles by Patricia Scanlan, Gareth O'Callaghan and Niall Quinn - either via Books for Students or see http://www.newisland.ie Audio publisher W F Howes (http://www.wfhowes.co.uk) plan to produce audio versions of these in the autumn. A new Scottish publisher based in Dingwall, Sandstone Press, has also started producing fiction for this market, starting with three titles by Scottish authors in a series called Vista - see http://www.sandstonepress.com Finally, we're pleased to report that some major UK publishers are now talking about putting together a series for 'new' adult readers. If you'd like to keep up to date with this, please keep an eye on the Vital Link website at http://www.vitallink.org.uk and sign up for our quarterly email newsletter. Many thanks Genevieve ===== Genevieve Clarke National Coordinator, The Vital Link w: 01672 562080 m: 0772 959 7680 [log in to unmask] http://www.vitallink.org.uk ********************************************************************** The views and comments expressed in this email are confidential to the recipients and should not be passed on to others without permission.
