This week's bulletin mentions a CILIP workshop on e-copyright coming up in Cardiff in August. Like most copyright events it is not dead cheap but for such important training, seems good value. I've added at the bottom of this CILIP Wales bulletin a copy of the publicity for the copyright event including booking details which you can email back to the organiser if you're interested. Apologies for the long email but I thought I'd better let you know soon as it is likely to book up very fast.

Subject: [liswca-list]: Gwasanaeth Gwybodaeth 267 CILIP Cymru/Wales Current Awareness Service 267

The months of June and July are a busy time for conferences and courses in Wales.

See the Diary at the end of this bulletin for more dates.

1  CYNULLIAD / WELSH ASSEMBLY

Correction to minutes (Current Awareness 265):
Culture, Welsh Language and Sport Committee, draft minutes of 12 May meeting

"£2m had been earmarked in the CyMAL prospectus to develop library services in liaison with local authorities."

This now reads "A £2m programme budget had been earmarked in the CyMAL prospectus."

So it covers ALL sectors, not just libraries (unfortunately!!)

3.2 Libri lobbies at library seminar

The DCMS seminar on the future of public libraries called in the wake of the recent Libri report 'Who's in charge' is due to take place on 22 June. Describing the 1.5% rise in visitor numbers revealed by CIPFA's latest annual report as disappointing, given that spending on libraries had increased by 8.5% over the same period, the report's author, Tim Coates, will call for drastic reforms, beginning in five or six authorities, to reduce staffing and book processing costs, and increase spending on books.

Bookseller, p6, 18 June

Back to books

This editorial suggests that although there is some truth in the arguments put by those defending public libraries against criticisms in the Libri report, libraries have nonetheless been guilty of neglecting books. Their repeated emphasis on the range of other services they provide, which was reflected in their responses to the report, 'does not help to highlight the role of books', it claims.
