"£2m
had been earmarked in the CyMAL prospectus to develop library services in

This now reads "A £2m

3.2 Libri lobbies at library seminar
The DCMS seminar on the future of public libraries called in the wake
of the recent Libri report 'Who's in charge' is due to take place on 22 June.
Describing the 1.5% rise in visitor numbers revealed by CIPFA's latest annual
report as disappointing, given that spending on libraries had increased by 8.5%
over the same period, the report's author, Tim Coates, will call for drastic
reforms, beginning in five or six authorities, to reduce staffing and book
processing costs, and increase spending on books.
Bookseller, p6, 18 June
This editorial suggests that although there is some truth in the
arguments put by those defending public libraries against criticisms in the
Libri report, libraries have nonetheless been guilty of neglecting books. Their
repeated emphasis on the range of other services they provide, which was
reflected in their responses to the report, 'does not help to highlight the role
of books', it claims.
