4.1 Total visits to UK Libraries

The 'Society Facts' section of the Guardian (9 June) reports CIPFA's 42nd annual report on public libraries, covering the year April 2002 to March 31 2003, which shows that the number of people using libraries was up by 5 million on the previous twelve months - equivalent  to 93,000 extra visits a week.   The report can be found at www.cipfastats.net

4.2 New resource for Dual Use Libraries

A Community of Practice has recently been set up by the University of Central England to support anyone working in or managing a dual use library and to provide information for anyone with a general interest in the area.

5.2 Book ends: 17,000 aspiring writers take a shot at finishing short stories started by their heroes

The Literacy and Social Inclusion project held a seminar last month to open up the debate around literacy and social inclusion, and to discuss some of the issues highlighted in the project's recent paper, 'Literacy and social inclusion: the policy challenge' .
