LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY

ERNEST COOK STUDENTSHIP IN RURAL PLANNING AND REGENERATION

Applications are now invited for this PhD studentship to be based in
the Geography Department at Loughborough University, commencing
October 2004. This Department was rated 5 in the 2001 RAE and boasts
a vibrant and well-resourced postgraduate community. This post would
be especially suited for a student with a Masters-level qualification
in Geography or cognate social science, but candidates with a good
undergraduate degree will also be considered where they can
demonstrate relevant knowledge and enthusiasm. This studentship is a
three-year fixed studentship, which pays fees (at UK/EU student rate)
and provides a maintenance grant of £9500 per annum.

This studentship is provided by the Ernest Cook Trust to explore the
impacts of the designation of the National Forest and other similar
initiatives in the East Midlands. A core objective of the National
Forest is the delivery of environmental education through the
involvement of all education sectors and other specialist
organisations. The Department of Geography at Loughborough University
has a research record in the sustainability and environmental
citizenship with sponsorship from a number of agencies. Building on
this research, and in collaboration with the National Forest Company
and Nottinghamshire County Council, the research studentship will
examine the ways in which environmental knowledges are developed and
promoted among young people and other groups involved in education
within the vicinity of land reclamation schemes. Academically the
research will contribute to understandings of citizenship,
sustainability and young people's geographies.

An application form for this post is available from the Postgraduate
Secretary, Mrs Diana Snaith (e-mail [log in to unmask], tel:
