medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (5. May) is the feast day of:

Eulogius of Edessa (d. c. 381) Eulogius was a priest of Edessa (now
Urfa, Turkey) who opposed Arianism. He was banished for this by
Emperor Valens, but was eventually recalled and became bishop.

Hilary of Arles (d. 449) Hilary was an important Roman administrator
who didn't convert to Christianity until his relative St. Honoratus
talked him into visiting the monastery of Lerins. Impressed, H. was
baptized and became a monk, then followed Honoratus when he became
bishop of Arles. H. then succeeded to the bishopric, where he won a
reputation for sanctity but annoyed the rest of the bishops of Gaul
by trying to establish his authority over them as metropolitan.

Godehard of Hildesheim (d. 1038) Godehard was from Bavaria, where he
won the interest of Duke Henry (later Emperor Henry II). G. was put
in charge of Niederaltaich in 996 and reintroduced monastic life
there (it had been a canonry); he went on to reform several other
monasteries, imposed by Henry II. In 1022 he became bishop of
Hildesheim. St. Gothard's Pass in the Alps seems to be named after
him.

Angelus of Jerusalem (d. 1220) Angelus was a native of Jerusalem, of
Jewish ancestry (his parents had converted to Christianity). He was
one of the first hermits on Mt. Carmel and was sent off to get papal
approval for their new rule. He did so, but stopped in Sicily on the
way home and made a man so angry by publicly denouncing his crimes
that the guy killed A.
