medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Since I spend my days attempting to transform students' Globish into English, I can't resist connecting this thread with that of teaching Medieval Religion. This will take two steps: 1. Dennis Martin speaks for many of us Vatican II Catholics in his thoughtful posts about how to approach questions of faith in a university classroom. What he doesn't mention is that many of those who take their assumptions as normative and needing no disclaimers--the feminists, the Marxists, the New Agers, the secularists--do so because they are so embedded in the culture of academia. Few moments of culture shock intrude on their confidence that theirs isn't the only take on things. 2. But do the students in their classrooms hear these biases? That would require English. I take heart when I think of all the protection that speaking Globish offers!
