medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (23. May) is the feast day of:

Desiderius of Langres and companions (d. 364 or 411) Desiderius was
a bishop of Langres, the victim of a failed peace negotiation. He
went to the camp of invading barbarians (either Alemans in 364 or
Vandals in 411) to beg for his city---but failed to convince and was
instead executed.

Desiderius of Vienne (d. 608) This Desiderius became bishop of
Vienne in 596. He ran into trouble with the Frankish queen Brunhild,
who eventually arranged to have D. stoned to death at a place now
named Saint-Didier-sur-Charlaronne, near Lyons.

Syagrius of Nice (d. c. 787) Syagrius was a relative of Charlemagne.
He became a monk at Lerins and then founded the monastery of St.
Pons, Cimiez (Provence), where he became abbot. From 777 on he was
bishop of Nice.

Guibert (d. 962) Guibert was a Lotharingian noble who retired from
soldiering to become a hermit on his estate at Gembloux (near
Brussels). He soon converted his hermitage into a monastery, but he
himself went off and became a monk at Gorze instead.

Ivo of Chartres (d. 1115) Ivo was an Augustinian canon who became
bishop of Chartres in 1091. He was famous for his knowledge of canon
law, despite which he was declared a saint.

William of Rochester (d. 1201) The subject of a popular English cult
at Rochester Cathedral unti the Reformation. Legend tells that
William was either a baker or fisherman of Perth (Scotland). While
on his way to the Holy Land, his servant robbed and murdered him at
Rochester. There were soon miracles at his tomb. . . .

Bartholomew Pucci-Franceschi (blessed) (d. 1330) Bartholomew was
from Montepulciano, a wealthy married man who left his wife to become
a Franciscan. He was a noted "holy fool." His cult was confirmed in
1880.
