Dear all,

Does anyone know of any research looking on the impact on children and
family life of growing up in a family where a disabled parent (or parents)
has paid carers/supporters/personal assistants around a lot of the time?
From time to time I get involved in court work where a local authority is
applying to remove a child or children from parents with learning
disabilities. There seems to be an assumption on the part of some local
authorities that it is bad for children to be in a household where a paid
worker might be a spending a lot of time supporting a disabled parent.
The arguments (rarely made explicit) seem to be that it is disruptive for
children because paid workers come and go, and their presence gets in the
way of the child's relationships with the disabled parent(s).

Many thanks
Deborah
