In his key note address at last week's World Conference on Health Promotion & Health Education in Melbourne, Professor Maurice Mittlemark (President of the International Union for Health Promotion & Education) urged all health promoters to check out the latest developments in other disciplines. Not really earth shattering I guess, except that of the dozen or so disciplines he provided as examples, he singled out community psychology as the most important ant. He regarded community psychology as the discipline that was most closely aligned with the aspirations of health promoters. In his words, "it's as if we operate in parallel universes". He even astonished the audience with a quote from Julian Rappaport, that sounded like something lifted from the latest, cutting edge World Health Organisation policy, except that it was written 25 years ago! (yes, the 3000 delegates really did collectively gasp) It was refreshing to know that at least someone cares and respects our work. If the ripples of his speech permeate, don't be surprised if you find more health promoters knocking on your doors. Or you might want to use this opportunity to open a few doors of your own. Many have decent budgets and are getting tired of "social change by brochure". Who'd ever have thought that a group like us could become trendy??
