He was one of the great scholars of his age, a patron of monastic reform, and an exemplary bishop. one could add that he he was a Great Builder : the vast crypt of the present cathedral is his work (as was the church above it, which, it is said, burned in 1194) ; and if one thinks about that "footprint" in the context of the early 11th century, one gets an idea of what an extraordinary building that was --dimensionally nearly as big as the present cathedral (save for the first western bays of the nave), though probably not as tall. Margot Fassler is of the opinion that F. played a crucial role in the expansion of the Marian cult at Chartres, his new building being an important part of that work (following the "If You Build It, They Will Come" principle). on this subject --and others-- see her typically quite excellent, erudite article : "Mary's Nativity, Fulbert of Chartres, and the Stirps Jesse: Liturgical Innovation circa 1000 and Its Afterlife", _Speculum_, 2000, pp. 389–434. an extraordinary fellow, apparently, even if he was Eyetalian. christopher Internationally Respected Leader : http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/common/imagedata/0,1658,328578,00.jpg ********************************************************************** To join the list, send the message: join medieval-religion YOUR NAME to: [log in to unmask] To send a message to the list, address it to: [log in to unmask] To leave the list, send the message: leave medieval-religion to: [log in to unmask] In order to report problems or to contact the list's owners, write to: [log in to unmask] For further information, visit our web site: http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/medieval-religion.html
