medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Today (12. April) is also the feast day of: Sofia and Vissia (d. ca. 250, supposedly). Sofia and Vissia, virgin martyrs of whom nothing is known, venerated at Fermo in the Marche. Whereas their cults are apparently at least as old as the Middle Ages, the evidence for them is wholly early modern (or perhaps almost so: Vissia has an inscription, but of what date??). Sofia was once celebrated on 30 April. They are mentioned here only as an excuse to point out the following virtual tour of Fermo's partly medieval cathedral: http://www.fermo.org/duomo/duomoindex.htm Not to miss the Fermo chasuble of St. Thomas Becket, an important specimen of 12th-century Islamic embroidery. There's a photograph in the tour's section on the cathedral treasury at: http://www.fermo.org/duomo/duomo6.htm For a recent discussion, see: Annabelle Simon-Cahn, "The Fermo Chasuble of St. Thomas Becket and Hispano-Mauresque Cosmological Silks: Some Speculations on the Adaptive Reuse of Textiles," _Muqarnas: An Annual on Islamic Art and Architecture_ 10 (1993), 1-5; available online at: http://archnet.org/library/documents/one-document.tcl?document_id=3914 Best, John Dillon ********************************************************************** To join the list, send the message: join medieval-religion YOUR NAME to: [log in to unmask] To send a message to the list, address it to: [log in to unmask] To leave the list, send the message: leave medieval-religion to: [log in to unmask] In order to report problems or to contact the list's owners, write to: [log in to unmask] For further information, visit our web site: http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/medieval-religion.html
