medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (12. April) is also the feast day of:

Sofia and Vissia (d. ca. 250, supposedly). Sofia and Vissia, virgin
martyrs of whom nothing is known, venerated at Fermo in the
Marche. Whereas their cults are apparently at least as old as the Middle
Ages, the evidence for them is wholly early modern (or perhaps almost so:
Vissia has an inscription, but of what date??). Sofia was once celebrated
on 30 April. They are mentioned here only as an excuse to point out the
following virtual tour of Fermo's partly medieval cathedral:

Not to miss the Fermo chasuble of St. Thomas Becket, an important specimen
of 12th-century Islamic embroidery. There's a photograph in the tour's
section on the cathedral treasury at:

For a recent discussion, see:

Reuse of Textiles," _Muqarnas: An Annual on Islamic Art and Architecture_
