medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

After combing through the indices of what seems like a zillion books (in English), none published after about 1955 refers to *the* Auvergne. All others skip the "the." Though hardly a scholarly source, one might consult the following:
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Discount_Hotels-g187090-Auvergne.html
This might be a tad more serious:
http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Auvergne
Then there's the good ole' Yahoo Encyclopedia:
http://dir.yahoo.com/regional/countries/france/regions/auvergne/
To be sure, one may find a "the" here and there, but there's absolutely no reason for its presence before "Auvergne." The French don't put an "l," in front of the name except when it's the subject of a sentence or a title or a heading:
http://www.cr-auvergne.fr/fr/index.asp
Here's the English version of same:
http://www.cr-auvergne.fr/uk/index.asp
As for possible relevance of names ending in "ie" in French and "y" in English, no one (I hope) speaks of "the" Poitou. If you do, see (and enjoy and drool):
http://www.a-castle-for-rent.com/castles/abbeys.htm
You'll have to scroll down a bit for Poitou, but it's worth the trip.
