i.     A referendum earlier this year resulted in an 81% majority in
favour of the change of the name of the specialty to Emergency Medicine

ii.    The proposed change of name of the Association has been
discussed repeatedly over a prolonged period.

iii.    The constitutional procedural requirements were followed.

iv.   The formal proposal to change the name of the specialty is
currently with the Specialist Training Authority before resubmitting to
the Department of Health. There is a strong indication of support from
the Department of Health for such a change.

Obviously, the specialist register, names of our departments, etc.,
etc., will only change when that procedure has been completed.

v.   The change of name applies solely to the Association.

I thought this would take a referendum from the membership, i.e. the whole membership? Surely such a momentous change can't be passed based solely upon the votes of those few present at yesterday's meeting? What does the Constitution say on the matter? And what does Her Majesty's Government say on the matter? In other words, will our CCSTs be changed in the specialist register to Emergency Medicine, and will our departments be renamed Emergency Departments, or does this only apply to the name of our association?

For those not present at the BAEM agm yesterday the Association's name has been changed to the British Association for Emergency Medicine.
