The Search Committee is still reviewing applications for the below
position in the Department of Music at UC San Diego.  Strong, qualified
candidates who have not yet submitted an application are invited to

described below rather closely.

TENURE TRACK FACULTY POSITION AVAILABLE

University of California, San Diego, Department of Music

The Department of Music at the University of California, San Diego
(http://www.ucsd.edu.music)  invites applications for a tenure-track
position at the Assistant Professor level for a scholar of popular music
to begin July 1, 2004.  The successful candidate will have research
interests in the role diverse ethnic and racial groups play in the
development of popular music in the United States.  He or she will be
expected to contribute to the graduate program in Critical
Studies/Experimental Practices and encouraged to participate in the
undergraduate concentration in Jazz and Music of the African Diaspora.
Specific course offerings could be drawn from a wide spectrum of topics,
including but not limited to the music of African-Americans,
Asian-Americans, Chicanos/Latinos, or Caribbean culture groups. In
addition to musicology and ethnomusicology, applications from other
disciplines are welcome.  The successful candidate will also participate
in California Cultures in Comparative Perspective, an interdisciplinary
research group that focuses on issues of race and ethnicity in
California.

A completed or nearly completed PhD is required, as well as proven
potential for distinguished scholarship and effective teaching at
graduate and undergraduate levels. To apply, please send a letter of
intent including a statement of qualifications and research interests,
curriculum vitae, a writing sample, and names and addresses (including

and continue until the position is filled.
