medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (30. March) is also the feast day of:

Zosimus of Syracuse (d. ca. 662). Like the recently celebrated Conus of
Naso (28 March; keeps showing up in Phyllis' sources as Conon of Nesi), Z.
is another Greek saint of Sicily whose Greek Life is preserved only in
Latin translation in the _Vitae sanctorum siculorum_ of Ottavio Gaetani
S.J. (d. 1620). He is said to have entered Syracuse's monastery of St.
Lucia at the age of seven and to have ultimately become its abbot. After a
lengthy abbacy he was elected bishop of Syracuse in 648 and served in that
post for thirteen years. His Life credits him with acts of charity to the
poor, with a special devotion to the BVM, and with an aversion to Jews. He
is also credited with restoring Syracuse's ancient church of Athena/Minerva
and with making this structure the city's new cathedral. For some
photographs of ancient Doric architectural remains incorporated into the
fabric of this cathedral, see:
