medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (27. March) is the feast day of:

John of Lycopolis (d. 394) John was one of the greatest hermits of
the Egyptian desert. He was born near Asyut and started his adult
life as a carpenter, but became a hermit in a cave at Lycopolis at
the age of 25. He spent 40 years at it, becoming a famous prophet.
Among the people who consulted him was Emperor Theodosius I.

Augusta (5th cent.) Legend says that Augusta was a daughter of a
German duke of Friuli (Italy); he wasn't a Christian and took it so
badly when his daughter converted that he personally killed her. A's
cult at Serravalle near Treviso is ancient.

Rupert of Salzburg (d. c. 717) Rupert seems to have been a Frank.
He became a missionary bishop at Worms and also worked around
Regensburg and along the Danube. The duke of Bavaria gave him a
ruined town, which R. rebuilt as Salzburg (Austria). So R. was the
first archbishop of Salzburg and also founded the monastery of St.
Peter's and the nunnery of Nonnberg. He is regarded as one of the
apostles of Bavaria and Austria.

Matthew of Beauvais (d. c. 1098) Matthew went on the first crusade,
but was captured by Muslims before getting to Jerusalem. He was
supposedly killed because he refused to convert to Islam.

Gelasius of Armagh (d. 1174) Gelasius was abbot of the monastery of
Derry (Ireland) and became archbishop of Armagh in 1138; according to
tradition he was the first Irish bishop to receive the pallium from
Rome, marking the beginning of a much stronger link between the Irish
church and the papacy.

Albert of Trent (d. 1181) Albert was bishop of Trent. The fact that
he was killed in the wars between Frederick Barbarossa and the
Lombards led to his veneration as a martyr.
