Symposium Objectives

The ERIC project (Effects of river flow changes in the fish communities of
the Douro, Tagus and Guadiana estuaries and adjacent coastal areas.
Ecological and socio-economic predictions) has been financially supported
by “Fundação para a Ciência e para a Tecnologia”. It aims to provide the
scientific basis against which to understand the influence of the
freshwater flow regulation on the fish communities of estuarine systems and
adjoining coastal areas, to evaluate the socio-economic impacts induced by
these changes and the institutional legal frameworks at a European Union
bilateral and international level, and to create a final predictive model
and legal framework applicable to other ecosystems.

It is axiomatic that while practitioners and researchers in these field
have to retain their own specialism, they also have to be aware of other
scientific, socio-economic and management disciplines. Hence, this
symposium arises from this need for integrating these and producing a
better knowledge and a consequent better management of estuarine systems.

Symposium Sessions
• Developments in estuarine science and management
• Knowledge status of Portuguese estuaries
• Modelling and monitoring applications
• Policies and management tools
