Possible Establishment of an AAG Geography of Education Sp

5 March 2004

Dear Colleagues:

RE: Possible Establishment of an AAG Geography of Education Specialty Group

In the light of some interesting new research on 'education', and on related issues (e.g., regional development, citizenship, subjectivity, urban change, cultural industries, knowledge production, intellectual history, services industries, global trade, neoliberalism, globalization, economic competitiveness), we are initiating discussions about the  possibility of establishing an AAG Geography of Education Specialty Group.

As we see it, at this very preliminary stage, a Geography of Education speciality group would seek to foster the development of geographical work *on* education (including systems, institutions, impacts, governance, etc), broadly defined.  We also believe that a Geography of Education specialty group would generate plenty of synergy with other AAG specialty groups, including the core groups anchored in sub-disciplines (e.g., economic, urban, political). And, needless to say, debates about the relationship between education and societal development will only increase over the next several decades.

If you are supportive, or curious, or critical, please come to a shortish meeting on Tuesday March 16th @ 2:45 pm immediately after panel discussion on Globalization/Trade/Neoliberalism/Higher Education. Details on this panel are available here:

If you cannot make this meeting, or you are not attending this year's AAG conference, and you are supportive of the idea of establishing a Geography of Education specialty group, please email both of us and we will put you on our contact list.  Our contact details are here:
